Monovision

Monovision is a compromise between distance and close vision, you may occasionally need glasses for extremes of distance or near vision.

Monovision is a very common option if you are approaching 45 years or older and wish to have good distance and closer vision without glasses.

Monovision Explained

Dr Graham Fraenkel provides a simple to understand explanation of Monovision.

For monovision we focus your distance dominant eye for distance and your fellow eye for near. This may sound strange but in fact works very well for 90% of people. Yes you have two eyes but one brain that blends the information from both eyes into one visual world.

Test drive Monovision

How do you know that monovision can work for you?

You can “test drive” monovision at the optometrist or at Laser Vision SA with contact lenses. You don’t have to be concerned that you have never worn or don't like contact lenses. For a short contact lens trial we can place the contacts for you. You can usually leave the contact lenses in overnight for just a few nights. Then we or your optometrist can review them for you.

If during this trial you feel dizzy, nauseated, out of balance, or your vision just isn’t good enough, then monovision is not for you.

Most patients find that during a short trial of monovision, their vision meets most of their needs and is acceptable, although there may be a sense that it will take 3-4 weeks to really get used to it.

Monovision can be performed with any laser vision correction such as PRK, Lasik or SMILE, or with clear lens extraction or cataract surgery.

Whilst monovision can reduce your need for glasses or contact lenses, we do not pretend monovision can eradicate the need for them 100%. As monovision is a compromise between distance and close vision, you may occasionally need glasses for extremes of distance or near vision. Examples could be driving at night in the rain for distance, or threading a needle for near. However most monovision patients can perform approximately 95% of visual tasks without spectacles.

You will also find that when your brain is tired for example early mornings or late nights, you will become a little more aware your distance eye struggles for reading and your reading eye for distance. This is perfectly normal.
