What is Presbyopia and Why It Affects People Over 40

Understanding Age-Related Near Vision Loss

Around the age of 40, the natural lens inside the eye becomes less flexible. This makes it harder to focus up close.

You may notice:

  • Holding your phone further away
  • Needing reading glasses for menus
  • Difficulty switching between distance and near
  • Constantly putting glasses on and off

This condition is called presbyopia. It affects everyone eventually — even people who have always had perfect distance vision.

Key Benefits of PRESBYOND®

Clear Vision at All Distances

Whether you’re at work or running errands, you’ll see clearer at far, intermediate and near with minimal effort and enjoy better depth perception. This helps you to move more confidently when playing sports and at work.

Immediate Results and Quick Recovery

You’ll notice improvements to your vision within 24 hours after your surgery, so you can work and drive within days. There is minimal downtime involved with PRESBYOND® treatment.

Freedom from Reading Glasses

You’ll never have to worry about losing or damaging expensive glasses ever again. Our tailored PRESBYOND® solutions are designed to replace the need for glasses and preserve any remaining near vision that you have left.

What is PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision?

PRESBYOND® treatment options are becoming an increasingly popular modified form of laser vision correction with promising results for patients1 over 40 years of age who prefer not to wear reading glasses.

Traditional monovision laser correction is a common procedure allowing for simultaneous distance and near vision, but has its limitations: it leaves intermediate vision, such as computer vision, slightly blurred.

PRESBYOND®, on the other hand, is a more natural and functional alternative to traditional monovision correction. It offers a seamless transition between distance and near vision, providing a clearer intermediate vision zone through precise, laser-guided spherical aberrations.

Standard laser vision correction is typically designed for younger patients who only need distance correction.

PRESBYOND® solutions are specifically tailored to address age-related near vision changes.

It is often considered by patients who:

  • Are too young for lens replacement
  • Want to avoid multifocal glasses
  • Are frustrated by constantly switching between glasses

During your consultation, we explain all options clearly so you can make an informed decision.

The ZEISS PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision software option is an innovative monovision solution that is effective at treating up to 97% of all presbyopia, according to ZEISS clinical studies. It is designed to optimise intermediate vision and improve binocular vision for presbyopic patients by using a wavefront-optimised corneal ablation profile which induces spherical aberrations during the treatment process.

Patients are left with a dominant eye which is clearer for distance vision, and a non-dominant eye which is used for reading at near, as well as enhanced intermediate and 3D vision with both eyes.

The ZEISS PRESBYOND® LASIK is a fully customisable program, which creates a continuous refractive power gradient for the optical zone of the cornea, also known as the “Blend Zone”, is illustrated below:

PRESBYOND®  technology takes into account factors such as pre-operative corneal spherical aberrations and surface topography, accommodation reserve, pupil size and anisometropic tolerance level to calculate a personalised ablation profile and optimised target refraction for you.

Most patients experience significant reduction in their dependence on glasses. However, natural ageing continues, and some patients may still occasionally use glasses for certain tasks.

Laser vision correction has been performed for many years. All procedures carry risks, which are carefully explained during consultation.

Age alone does not determine suitability. The health of your eyes and your visual goals are more important.

For some patients over 55, lens replacement surgery may be a more suitable long-term option. This is discussed individually.

What to Expect – Procedure, Recovery & Results

Step by Step: Your PRESBYOND® eye surgery journey from start to finish

At your first appointment, we will conduct a thorough ophthalmic assessment of your vision, glasses prescription and eye health, including an anterior and posterior eye segment evaluation and tests with dilated pupils.

With access to sophisticated digital scanning technology such as corneal topography,  we’ll create a 3D map of your cornea. These results will help determine if you’ll meet the requirements for PRESBYOND® surgery and allow us to simulate post-treatment vision outcomes.

We’ll also have a discussion with you about your expectations, vision goals, lifestyle and preferences, and provide you with written information about the PRESBYOND® procedure.

You’ll be awake for the procedure. The treatment, which takes up to 20 minutes in total for both eyes, uses a completely pain free, invisible laser.

The laser will create a thin flap on the surface of your cornea, which is removed to allow for the treatment to reshape the underlying cornea. When the treatment is complete, the flap is replaced over the treatment area.

Once the anaesthetic drops wear off, you may experience some mild discomfort, pain, watery eyes or a scratchy feeling, which usually subsides after 8 hours.

Your vision may take up to 8 hours to become clear after surgery, and you should be able to drive or work the next day. It will continue to improve gradually over the next 7 days. You may take several months to fully adapt to the changes.
